Life As We Know It
Life Changes Trust
about the project
The ‘Life As We Know It’ project was commissioned by the Life Changes Trust and delivered by Media Education and Dr Briege Nugent. We provided training, mentoring and creative collaboration for Liam Docherty, Roxsanne McGowan, Jordan Lee and Chloe Williams to become Peer Researchers who supported Research Scotland and The Lines Between to evaluate projects for care experienced young people. Our focus was to facilitate the Peer Researchers’ reflections of their own journey using arts-based opportunities to explore their lived experiences and motivations of creating positive changes to the care system.
The learning from this work underscores the importance of practicing an ethics of care that promotes inclusion and flexibility, the value of peer research and the power of the arts as a tool for engagement. Read our Project Report to discover our findings.
what we did
We delivered a creative programme of participatory video, photography, zine-making, music production and creative writing for the Peer Researchers to make original work, whilst being paid at living wage and achieving a certificate in our course ‘Access to Media’ accredited by Edinburgh College.
The creative platform was a powerful means for the Peer Researchers to capture their personal journeys and understand the role of storytelling as a process of reflection.
Our training and mentoring gave the group skills and experiences to ‘reframe’ their identity on their own terms and “re-see” who they were, building affirmation for their role as Community Leaders.
